Emergency Service Volunteers

Emergency service volunteers play a vital role in the South Australian community.

There are over 18,000 dedicated and brave South Australians who add to the social capital of our community because they are willing to protect their community in times of natural disasters and emergencies.

We in South Australia can be really proud that we have one of the highest volunteer participation rates in the nation, with more than 600,000 of us being active volunteers. Of all the city and regional areas in Australia, South Australia's country areas have the highest rate with 52% of the population engaged in volunteering activity.

The State Government fully supports the personal contributions of volunteers and their employers.

SAFECOM has developed the Volunteer & Employee Recognition & Support Program that formally recognises and rewards the passion and commitment of our emergency services volunteers and their employers.

Our volunteers are supported by committed employers who make it possible for them to leave their places of work at very short notice in service of their communities.

Employers who take a socially responsible approach to volunteers contribute to the fabric and resilience of their communities and make an enormous contribution to the success of our emergency services.
